Happy Father's Day

In honor of Mike on Father's Day, I'd like to take some time to brag on him a bit. He might be a little embarrassed, but I feel it's so very important to brag on your spouse. He's a wonderful husband and father, I want to tell the world!

When Mike and I started casually dating, I was hesitant about getting serious because he had made a comment when we were friends that he didn't see himself ever having children. I knew that being a mother was something that I'd eventually want someday. The conversation came up one night and Mike corrected my assumptions. He wanted to be a father someday, just never found the right woman to have a family with. Time went on and he told me that he could see himself starting a family with me someday. For many reasons, I always thought he'd be a great father.  He's patient and has a great sense of humor. He's caring, devoted and a hard worker. He knows how to hang out and have fun at home, not having to be on the go all the time.  He loves animals, God and his family.

When I was wrapping up my final year in college, we started to try for a family. It was a long road, but Mike was always hopeful, firmly believing that God would provide us with a family someday.  The Lord, in His perfect timing, blessed us with Henry.  At our first sonogram, Mike sat and stared at the screen, asking questions about what everything was. He was very supportive throughout the pregnancy and did everything possible to help me stay relaxed and stress-free. I fondly remember so many nights that we'd sit on our couch or lay in the bed and poke at my constantly expanding stomach.  One night will always be fresh in my mind though. I nearly passed out from laughing when Mike pushed my belly and Henry pushed back. I thought Mike was going to jump through the roof! What a great memory.

When it came time to welcome Henry into the world, Mike put on his poker face. He was laid back that day, very relaxed (at least one of us was!).  He later admitted that he was concerned about all the unknowns but gave it to God and tried to make the best of it so that he could be there for me.  When the doctor said it was time for a c-section, his calm demeanor kept me together. *Sidenote: I sort of live by the rule that if Mike is freaking out, I probably need to as well.* When he came into the OR, he had a mask over his face, but I could still seem him smiling. That's one of the very few things I clearly remember about the delivery. He was just beaming, even before Henry arrived.  Of course when it came time to announce if we had a son or a daughter, he was overjoyed to see a little boy.  He would have loved that baby even if it was a girl, but having his very own son sealed the deal for him.  He was the first person to hold Henry and Henry was the first baby he'd ever held. It's such a simple, but incredibly neat thing to know.

As the days and sleepless nights went along, he fell into the role of father like an old pro. He was an amazing support to me as I recovered from the c-section and was quick to tell me to rest so he could have some Daddy-Henry time. Daddy was admittedly nervous about all that came with a new baby, but he did such a great job. He would get nervous sometimes, but was still really great with him.

Daddy and Henry

Mike is a very attentive dad and even though I tease him about being uptight sometimes (about his safety, health, etc), he wants nothing more than to protect him, love him and enjoy every waking second with Henry.  Henry adores his Daddy and loves to hug and kiss him.  He squeals when Daddy comes home and giggles with crazy excitement when Daddy picks him up after Sunday School.

hanging out on the boat - June 3, 2012

The two of them have a lot in common. For starters, they are both cautious when trying new stuff.  Mike is an analytical thinker and we see a lot of that in Henry too.  Mike loves to laugh and have a great time, but like Henry, he'd rather sit back and observe for a little while first.  They both enjoy rounds of tickle time and being silly.  Both fans of racing and baseball. I know Mike is excited to show him the Olympic events this summer on tv.  Mike can't wait until Henry's old enough to take to the dirt track races, something he enjoyed as a kid.

a favorite video of them playing together

Mike, thank you for being such an amazing father and husband. You are a huge blessing to me and Henry.  I know that you would do anything for our son and I know that he will grow up knowing that. Thank you for being the provider, the push over when it's needed, the leader, the one with the patience to handle the challenges, the Godly example and the Daddy. We love you!

Overboard

Nana and Papa bought a boat so we went tonight for our first trip out.  When we got to the marina, Nana and Ge-Gee wanted to take the kids to see the fish. Apparently the fish at the marina are spoiled, you can buy little bags of fish food and they just swim right up. It was pretty neat watching these fish go after it. The kids seemed to enjoy it too.

Henry with his own cup of cookies; he wasn't sharing!

It was neat going through the marina and seeing the boat in the slip.  We are very excited about the boat and thankful Nana and Papa bought it. Sidenote: I grew up on the lake before we started drag racing so this is a good part of my life that I enjoy getting back.  Anywho, Henry hopped aboard with very little hesitation but was very curious.  He smiled while we cruised along and seemed to enjoy himself.

Nikki, Livie and Kevin - just cruisin'

someone stole Aunt Corinne's sunglasses

He wasn't a huge fan of the life jacket once we stopped and I think since he saw the adults without them, he was ready to ditch his. We eventually talked him out of his fit and he even got in the water for a little bit.  I'm not sure who was more nervous, me or him. Something about holding a 26 pound sack of taters in a life jacket isn't too enjoyable. He enjoyed sitting on the swim deck and kicking his feet in the water. I think next time will be more fun and it will only go up from there.  Cruising was definitely his favorite part of the trip. It was mine too. :)

Livie wanted a cookie and "in da yake!"

Thanks again Nana and Papa! We really enjoyed it and look forward to the next trip!

Memorial Day weekend

Our family had a FUN Memorial Day weekend!  We had Mike's parents over Saturday night for dinner and we really enjoyed the visit. We had spaghetti for dinner which is always a crowd favorite. Henry had about 3 pieces of Texas Toast for dinner.
Sunday, we went to church and then had our Sunday School class and their families over for lunch.  We set up every water toy known to man and let the 13 children ages 5 and under just go for it. Loved it!!  I bet there were plenty of good naps to be had afterwards!
After Henry's nearly 3 hour nap, we loaded up and headed to my parents' house to visit more family.  We played in the backyard with the kids and laughed until it hurt.  I took about 75 shots (a bunch of cute ones of her girls together, but I feel odd posting pics of her girls here without making blog private)  None of these shots were posed or influenced, but bribing small children with strawberries and/or ice cream may have taken place.
"Hey ladies!"

Do little boys just instinctively know how to do that?!

There was a water gun fight in progress and someone got caught in the crossfire.

So, Uncle Kevin had to teach the boy how to protect himself.

Sniper in training?

Watch this!

He refused to get in the pool with the girls in it but as soon as they got out, he was all in!

We also practiced our fishy kiss face

Tailgate party! Proof that he doesn't really hate Olivia
